Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists
Published in Paperback by Thames & Hudson (01 April, 1999)
Authors: Jan Marsh, Pamela Gerrish Nunn, Manchester City Art Gallery, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, and Southampton Art Gallery
Average review score:

A wonderful book
Most books on the Pre-Raphaelites only touch briefly on the women artists. This book looks at these women, the barriers that made it difficult for them to paint and the tragic lives that some of them had. no Pre-Raphaelite collection is complete without this book.

A wonderful resource
I am an avid fan of Pre-Raphaelite painting, and was very pleased to find this book. It is very thorough and wonderfully done. It contains more than 230 lush illustrations, many in color. Featured are 20 artists, some of whom I wasn't familiar with before. Very nice!

A Seat in the Crowd
Published in Paperback by Trafford Publishing (May, 2000)
Authors: Paul Windridge and Linda Harvey
Average review score:

A Page Turner
This is a superb book. I couldn't put it down. Extremely well written and a must have for anyone interested in football from the fans point of view.

Finally, a view not biased by finance
I can't recommend this book stronger. For Manchester United fans it's the opportunity to follow a year with the side from the untainted by the PLC view of the supporter. For Reds abroad, it serves as the perfect reminder of home. For non-United or those not football supporters it's a chance to understand what we go through. Well written and personal, Paul and Linda have created a book you'll want to dip into time and time again.

Sir Sidney Hamburger and Manchester Jewry: Religion, City, and Community (Parkes-Wiener Series on Jewish Studies)
Published in Paperback by Vallentine Mitchell (June, 1999)
Author: Bill Williams
Average review score:

The definitive biography of "Mr Manchester"
Since Sir Sidney Hamburger passed away in July 2001, Bill Williams' work will become the definitive biography of the man the Anglo-Jewish community called "Mr Manchester." Virtually nothing of significance happened in the Manchester Jewish community from 1945 to 2000 without Sidney Hamberger's personal involvement, surely a unique record in any major diaspora Jewish community. In addition, Hamburger was a successful businessman, outstanding local politician and farsighted health services planner and administrator. Bill Williams, doyen of the historians of Anglo-Jewry, has provided a masterful biography and fascinating record of post-war Jewish life developing, expanding and fragmenting after the damage and hardship of World War II.

A welcome contribution to Judaic studies.
Sir Sidney Hamburger achieved a substantial role in Manchester, the City of Salford and the North-West region, England as chairman of the Planning and Finance Committees of Salford City Council, leader of the Labour Group on the City Council, and Mayor of Salford during 1968-69, as well as playing a leading role in the post-war reconstruction of his city. Sir Sidney Hamburger And Manchester Jewry is the story of a remarkable politician and community leader who was also deeply involved in the Jewish community's Zionist movement through the massive social and political upheavals of the post-war years. He derived his idealism from an Orthodox Judaism to which he was strictly committed. An outstanding biography of a provincial Jewish leader, Sir Sidney Hamburger And Manchester Jewry is a superb study of leadership in provincial Anglo-Jewry, an informative exploration of the collective identity of a Jewish general born in Britain to parents of Eastern European origin, and a welcome contribution to Judaic studies reading lists and library collections.

Statistical Physics (The Manchester Physics Series)
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (April, 1988)
Author: Franz Mandl
Average review score:

My Favorite Physics Book
This book is really one of the most interesting books I've ever read, and is my favorite book in phyics. The writing style is clear, the figures and graphs well-done, and the book contains valuable exercises and partial solutions. As an undergraduate text it requires a basic background in diff. eq., classical mechanics, e&m etc, but never gets too intimidating. In a graduate statmech class I found the background I received from Mandl carried me almost all the way through. What a great book!

Review by a graduate student.
Thermodynamics gives a phenomenological description of properties of matter that are dependent on temperature. Whereas Statistical Physics attempts to give a microscopic view point of properties of matterThere is no concept of heat as such in the statistical approach . The two subjects though different in their approach complement each other. The crux of the difficulty is a begginner must try not imagine very much in a microscopic level when he learns thermodynamics. But when a student learns Statistical Physics he has to imagine in microscopic terms. There are usually two broad varieties of text books, Those which emphasize thermodynamics and leave statistical physics. But the worst case is books which start with a microscopic view.(e.g books by Pippard , Zemansky & Dittmanetc) These books fail to make a student appreciate the beauty and mathematical completeness of classical thermodynamics.(e.g popular books by Rief Kittel & Kromer,Baierlin). I have seen a ! few friends of mine who could manipulate details from partitiomn functions , but they don't understand even the first twolaws of thermodynamics. Here is where Mandl's book succeeds. It introduces both the subjects in such a meticulous way that you don't feel pertuturbed by the different views. The book is short and yet comprehensive. It covers few well known examples like paramagnetism , blackbody radiation in detail. The advanced portions are maked with asterisks or gray tint(this is typical of all books in the series. I would recommend this book instead of two sepeate courses on thermodynamics and Statistical Physics. Though the approach is not in chronological order it avoids much tautology of learning and unlearnig between the macroscpic and microscopic view.Yet another noteworthy aspect is a good treatment of open systems via the grand canonical ensemble in the last chapter. The problems in this book are superb. There are a few confidence building problems and there are hi! nts , answers and even complete solutions for tougher probl! emsThis book is ideally suited for both class room and self study..

Under the Bridge : Stories and Poems by Manchester's Homeless
Published in Paperback by Notre Dame College (01 December, 2000)
Author: Ray Gamache
Average review score:

I Highly Suggest You Read This Book!
This book gives the story of the homeless in their own words. It touched me deeply and personally. This book was designed (the cover and other insert art) by students at Notre Dame College in Manchester, NH... as I am one of these students who helped with the project. I think for anyone who wants to see the reality of being homeless, this book is an excellent resource.

"Under The Bridge" is Astounding!
As a formerly homeless citizen I've read many anthologies written by my brothers and sisters who are still on the streets.

This was by far the best!

A very compelling and readable collection!

The Archaeology of Disease
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (November, 1995)
Authors: Charlotte Roberts and Keith Manchester
Average review score:

Well-written and intelligible
Well-written and intelligible book on the archaeology of disease.
Good discussions both of manifestations of disease in individual
skeletal remains, and in populations. Mostly oriented towards
disease per se, but there's a good chapter on trauma, as well.
Especially good coverage of dental disease. Oriented towards an
academic, rather than towards a lay, audience, but I found it
very readable nonetheless.

The Arms Of Krupp 1587-1968 Part 2 Of 2
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape, Inc. (01 January, 1984)
Author: William Manchester
Average review score:

This tape is well worth the price
I listen to tapes on my daily commute. This was just the next on the list. It turned out to be an eye opener. This is the story of the Krupp family and dealings between 1587 and 1968. So you see it in so another war book but a struggle in economics.

From the dust cover flap:

"When Germany's ruling class buried the last of the Krupps in the rain on August 3, 1967 they witnessed the end of a four-hundred-year dynasty which had armed Germany in three major wars and influenced the course of German and indeed of European history for centuries."

I also found an interesting reference to a film called "Major Barbara" ASIN: 6302969840

Beowulf (Manchester Medieval Classics)
Published in Hardcover by Barnes & Noble (June, 1978)
Author: Michael Swanton
Average review score:

Mystical Beowulf
Beowulf is the greatest surviving Old English poem; a poem predominantly based upon Nordic-Germanic folklore, heroic legends, historical traditions and biblical sources all united. Laced throughout the entirety of Beowulf one can find many elements of Christianity and Christian philosophy - whether it be superficial metaphor, inter-textuality or allegory - man lives only through the grace of God, all earthly things stem from God, or Mans bearing is to be humble and unselfish. Nevertheless intertwined into these Christian elements there is also a strong sense of heroic pride redolent of pagan influence. Thus, Beowulf presents one with a dichotomous relationship between Christian and pagan values.Beowulf is a mix of two ideals; the heroic warrior of the Pagans and the humble selfless servant of the Christians. It is a poem written in a time when Christianity and Paganism existed simultaneously, where many of the newer moral values of the Christians were consistent with Pagan values. Therefore any assessment of Beowulf must deal with both Pagan and Christian themes. Together, the Christian and the Pagan, form an integral part of the poem, in both the social content of the era and in the digressions. They are all a part of the poem, in which no part can be ignored without compromising the poet's desired effect
